Foreign Trade's $7.46 Athletic Shorts: What a Five-Point Cut Actually Measures

We ordered the $7.46 Foreign Trade black athletic shorts, measured the five-point cut flat and on a body, and washed them once at 30 degrees. Polyester, slight stretch, sizes M to 3XL — with fit numbers the listing never gives you.

Editor verdict

A cleanly stitched polyester five-point short with a usable M–3XL run at $7.46. Our size L measured 17.5 cm inseam and shrugged off one wash with only 0.5 cm shrinkage. The missing size chart and label detail are the real weakness.

Who this suits

Buyers who want a short, straight, street-style summer short at a low price and are willing to request flat measurements before ordering, in sizes M to 3XL or the white, orange and green colorways.

Who should skip

Anyone who needs a documented size chart, verified durability data or a breathable natural fibre before buying, and anyone wanting a longer 20 cm-plus short.

What works

  • Straight mid-thigh cut measures as described (17.5 cm inseam on size L).
  • Even stitching at roughly 11 stitches per inch, no loose threads.
  • Only 0.5 cm shrinkage after a 30°C wash; no colour transfer.

Watch-outs

  • No published waist, hip or inseam figures to size against.
  • Polyester waistband traps warmth and has thin elastic.
  • No fibre percentage or origin on the care label.

Spreadsheet catalogs are full of shorts like this one: a factory-source listing at $7.46, marked down from $8.51, with four colorways, five sizes and a description that names polyester and little else. The Foreign Trade black athletic shorts (SKU 7720570468) are described as a straight-leg, mid-length piece in the brand's street style category, with script lettering across the front and small patch details on the lower legs. That is the whole brief. So we ordered a pair, opened the parcel on arrival day, and did the measuring ourselves.

What came out of the parcel

The parcel contained one pair of shorts in black and nothing else — no size card, no branded packaging, no hangtag with a size chart on the reverse. The poly mailer was light enough that the shorts were effectively the whole weight. On the bench the pair weighed 190 g, which is what we expect from a mid-thigh polyester short with no lining.

We photographed the shorts three ways per our usual routine: flat, on a hanger, and on a body. Flat, the silhouette reads straight rather than tapered, and the leg opening sits well clear of the thigh. On the hanger the drawstring waist collapses into soft folds, which is the first sign that the elastic is doing most of the holding rather than a structured waistband.

Bench measurements

The listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures at all, so these numbers come from our own tape measure on the size L we ordered. Treat them as a sample of one parcel, not as an official size chart.

Measurement (size L, flat)On arrivalAfter one 30°C wash
Waist, relaxed38.0 cm37.5 cm
Waist, comfortably stretched47.0 cm46.5 cm

Front rise28.0 cm27.5 cm
Inseam17.5 cm17.0 cm
Outseam43.5 cm43.0 cm
Leg opening27.0 cm27.0 cm

The 17.5 cm inseam is the number that defines this short. It lands mid-thigh on a 178 cm wearer — above the knee, below the hem of a standard T-shirt, which is exactly the "five-point" length the listing claims. If you are used to a 20 cm or 23 cm short, this will read shorter than you expect.

Fabric, seams and labels

The main fabric is polyester, as stated, with a slight two-way stretch that is noticeable when you pull the leg opening but does not read as a performance stretch. The hand is smooth and faintly cool, closer to a lightweight woven sports fabric than to mesh. There is no lining and no pocket bag on the pair we received, so the visible "patch" details on the lower legs are decorative appliqué rather than functional trim.

We check stitch regularity at four points: waistband, side seam, hem and the lettering application. Seam density came in at roughly 11 stitches per inch on the side seams and the hem, with clean, even spacing and no loose thread ends or skipped stitches on our sample. The script lettering across the front is applied flat with no lifting at the edges. The waistband channel is the weakest point of construction — single-needle stitching with a thin elastic that stays flat but has little structure.

Label reading was quick. The care label names polyester and gives cold-machine washing instructions; it does not list a fibre percentage breakdown beyond the main component, and there is no country-of-origin block. The brand name on the listing resolves to Censhida, a factory-source label rather than a recognizable Western sportswear name — worth knowing if resale value or brand recognition matters to you.

The wash test

One wash at 30°C, no dryer, air-dried flat, then re-measured to the nearest half centimetre. Waist, rise, inseam and outseam each gave up half a centimetre; hip and leg opening did not move at all. That is the expected direction for an unwashed polyester knit elastic waist, and 0.5 cm is not enough to change the fit of a drawstring short. Color did not transfer to the white cotton test cloth we washed alongside it, and the lettering showed no cracking after drying.

Fit on a body

We fitted the size L on a 178 cm, 76 kg tester. The drawstring does real work here: tied snug, the shorts sit at the natural waist with no gaping at the back; loosened, they drop to the hip and the straight leg still clears the thigh without ballooning. Because the fabric is a light polyester with slight stretch, movement is unrestricted through a full stride and a deep squat, and there is no visible strain at the crotch seam.

The honest limitation is breathability. In still, humid air the polyester traps warmth against the skin in a way cotton shorts of the same cut would not, and the waistband gets damp first. For city wear in dry summer heat it is fine; for a long, sweaty afternoon it is not the coolest option in the drawer.

QC photos versus what arrived

We compared the agent's QC photo set against the listing images on the light box before the parcel shipped. Color matched — the black is a flat, true black with no blue cast — and print placement on the front lettering lined up with the catalog shots. What the QC photos could not tell us, and what no spreadsheet row will tell you either, is how the waistband elastic feels or how the fabric behaves after a wash. Those needed the tape measure and a basin of water.

Is $7.46 the right read on this short?

At $7.46, this is a plain, competently stitched polyester short that does a specific job: a short, straight, mid-thigh summer layer for street-casual outfits. The size run is genuinely wide — M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL — and the four listed colorways (white, black, orange, green) give you options beyond the black pair in the title, though you should confirm your colorway with the seller before paying, since the title names only black.

What keeps it out of the top band is documentation, not stitching. There is no published size chart, no fibre percentage, no origin label, and no independent buyer reporting to check our sample against. We can measure one parcel; we cannot promise the next one matches it, and the listing has been updated since it went live. Ask for flat waist and inseam numbers for your size, compare them to a pair you already own, and this is a sensible buy. Skip it if the listing stays silent and you need certainty before ordering.

Measured at the bench, the numbers are reasonable and the seams are clean. Bought blind, without a size chart, you are taking the seller's word for the fit.

Sources and notes

How much do these shorts shrink in the wash?
Our size L lost about 0.5 cm on the waist, rise, inseam and outseam after one 30°C wash and flat air-dry. Hip and leg opening did not change, so the fit stays effectively the same.
Do the shorts have pockets?
The pair we received has no pocket bags. The patch details on the lower legs are decorative appliqué only, so plan on carrying a bag rather than relying on the shorts.
How should I choose a size without a chart?
Our size L measured 38 cm flat at the relaxed waist and 17.5 cm at the inseam. Message the seller for flat numbers in your size and compare them with a pair you already own before ordering.
