Batch Two Didn't Match Batch One: Re-Ordering the $7.01 Maison Margiela Print Tee

We bought one colour code, logged it, then re-ordered the same SKU three weeks later. Chest and length held within a centimetre; print placement and the washed black shade did not. Here is what to compare before you approve a parcel.

Batch Two Didn't Match Batch One: Re-Ordering the $7.01 Maison Margiela Print Tee

Editor verdict

A genuinely wearable 250g loose cotton tee at $7.01, with repeatable construction and cut. Print placement and washed shades drift between parcels, so treat the QC photo as the real specification.

Who this suits

Buyers who want a roomy midweight cotton tee, are matching one specific colour code, and will request flat measurements and a QC photo before shipping.

Who should skip

Anyone who needs the fit settled from the size label alone, or who expects two orders of the same code to be visually identical.

What works

  • Midweight opaque cotton knit with consistent neck rib, hem and side seams across two parcels.
  • Loose cut held within a centimetre at the chest and half a centimetre at shoulder and sleeve.
  • Broad black, white, beige and blue colour run in S–XL at a low unit price.

Watch-outs

  • Print size and drop moved 1.5 cm between parcels of the same code.
  • The washed-black shade read lighter in the second parcel; plain black did not.
  • S–XL labels are not tied to Margiela's numeric sizing, so flat measurements are essential.

The Maison Margiela print tee at $7.01 (SKU 7718798570) is the kind of listing our desk keeps returning to: a plain 250g cotton crew-neck, a loose cut, S–XL, and a colour-code wall long enough that two buyers can order "black" and receive visibly different garments. Existing coverage of this shirt has focused on decoding those codes and on what washing does to the print. This review asks a narrower question: if you order the same code twice, does the second parcel behave like the first?

We ordered, wore and laundered two parcels of the same size and colour code, spaced three weeks apart, both routed through a shopping agent. Everything below was checked on arrival, on a hanger, and on a 178 cm tester.

What we ordered and how we checked it

Both parcels carried one tee in the same labelled size and the same black-family colour code, plus a second code for cross-reference. On arrival we photographed each shirt flat, on a hanger and on a body; measured chest, shoulder, sleeve and body length against the listing's published chart; and counted stitch density at the neck rib, shoulder seam, side seam and hem. Labels were read for fibre content and care instructions, and the prints were compared side by side on the light box with the agent's QC photo set before the parcel was approved.

One structural caveat applies to every number below. The listing runs S–XL, but Maison Margiela itself sells tops in Italian numeric sizing. Brand-level reporting puts a 46 at a comfortable medium, and published brand charts place S at a 36" chest and XL at 46–48". The S–XL labels here are not tied to a numeric size, so treat our measurements as a description of one labelled size, not as a conversion table.

What held between the two parcels

  • Construction. Neck rib height, the double-needle hem and the side-seam allowance read the same on both shirts. Stitch regularity at the four checkpoints was consistent, with no skipped runs or loose thread tails.
  • Fabric hand. Both felt like the midweight knit the listing describes — opaque, with a dry finish that the catalog attributes to an anti-wrinkle treatment. Neither felt like a thin summer tee.
  • Shoulder and sleeve. Shoulder width moved half a centimetre; sleeve length from the shoulder point moved half a centimetre. That sits inside the listing's stated 2 cm tolerance.

The printed artwork is the loosest variable in the whole listing. On parcel one the graphic sat close under the neckline; on parcel two it dropped lower and printed slightly smaller. The listing describes abstraction and varied placement across dozens of codes, so this is arguably by design — but it means the QC photograph attached to your order is the only reliable record of where the artwork will land on the shirt you actually receive.

The second divergence was colour. Our washed-black code read a shade lighter and greyer in parcel two under the same daylight lamp, while the plain black code was effectively identical across both. If you are buying a washed or haze-blue code to match something you already own, budget for drift.

Two shirts, same code, same size, three weeks apart: the cut is repeatable, the print and the washed shades are not.

What two wash cycles did

Both shirts went through one 30-degree wash and were re-measured after drying. Chest shrinkage was 0.5 cm on both; body length lost 1.0 cm on parcel one and 0.5 cm on parcel two. No print cracking appeared at the edges, and the neck rib returned to shape on the hanger. Because the cut is loose, the length change is the number worth watching: a shirt that already sits high on a taller frame will sit a little higher after a wash.

The €650 reference point

An independent review of a different Maison Margiela cotton shirt documented 100% cotton, single-needle sewing, side gussets and Italian production — and a retail price around €650. That is a useful benchmark for what the label's own construction looks like, not evidence about this listing. We saw no gussets here and cannot verify origin. What we can say is that at $7.01 the shirt is priced as a spreadsheet find, and it should be judged on the measurements above rather than on inherited reputation.

Before you approve the parcel

  1. Ask the agent for flat chest and body-length measurements in centimetres, plus the weight, before the item leaves the warehouse.
  2. Compare the QC photo against the listing image for your exact colour code — not the main gallery shot.
  3. Log which code you bought. On a listing with sixty-plus variants, "black" alone is not a re-order instruction.

Note also that the brand's own webstore carries a weak Trustpilot rating, around 2.6/5 with roughly 76% one-star reviews centred on fulfilment and service. That concerns the official channel, not this listing, but it is a reason not to assume a branded route will be the smoother one.

Sources and notes

Will two orders of the same colour code look identical?
Not necessarily. Our two parcels matched on cut and construction, but the chest graphic shifted about 1.5 cm lower and printed slightly narrower, and the washed black read lighter. Compare each order against its own QC photo.
How much does the tee shrink in the wash?
At 30 degrees, both shirts lost 0.5 cm at the chest and between 0.5 and 1.0 cm in body length. The neck rib returned to shape on the hanger and no print edges cracked.
What should I ask the agent before approving shipping?
Request flat chest and body-length measurements in centimetres, the parcel weight, and a QC photo of your exact colour code rather than the main gallery image. The S–XL label alone will not tell you how it fits.
